Sweet Alyssum- Snow Carpet
Sweet Alyssum live up to their name, a sweet fragrance come from these dainty flowers. They are useful in alpine rock gardens, borders, planters, hanging baskets and dry zones. They are small plants that may get 3 to 6 inches tall and produce clusters of tiny flowers in clumps.
While not frost tolerant, sweet alyssum plants will self sow and can provide you with year after year of bright color in milder climates. Alyssum does love cooler weather. It starts blooming in April, however it may go dormant during the heat of the summer months. Don't worry come September/October it will reseed it's self and bloom through November, sometimes as late as December.
Here on the farm we plant sweet alyssum everywhere! The tiny flowers feed beneficial insects including parasitic wasps (no they don't sting humans). Instead they insert their eggs inside aphids, killing the aphids.
